The Importance of Imagination

By Awnya Boam of Story Time Felts Ind. Consult.

Every child is born with it, every adult has it too, but in this world or technology, computer games, the Internet, TV, DVD's, movies, ipods and any other kind of entertainment you could think of, few actually know how to use it. This is imagination. How do you learn how to use imagination? What can it help you do?

Imagination is a part of the mind, separate from the rational thought processes. It is a safe place for dreams and where you can fly without wings or an airplane. It is here that children in days gone by would turn for entertainment. Imagination helps kids learn and play and helps adults to be creative in coming up with solutions or new products in their different lines of work.

You can begin to use your imagination by taking a simple object like a stick or a paperclip and looking for what it could become. The sky is the limit. Allow yourself to believe that it is possible even when your mind says that it is not. The quickest way to get a child to imagine is to give them a paper and some paints or crayons and then leaving them alone while they create something new. Ask them what they have made. Have them come up with a story about it. This sounds simple enough, but how many children actually do this on a regular basis? Most are too occupied with something that needs a plug and electricity.

Imagination is the mode of transportation by which the technologies of the future will arrive. If we continue to create things based on what we already have, we will soon reach the end of the line. We as a society need individuals who know how to dream and imagine to come up with new ideas, products, and concepts so that we will continue to grow and be competitive in the markets today.

As we start to create more and be entertained less, we will see more progress in all areas of our lives. People will remember how to dream not only about what they can be but what we can create. Now just imagine if we started our children out imagining from the beginning. What kind of head start would that give them to life?
